Indigo marks another mermaid tale by Alice Hoffman, though unlike her other book Aquamarine, there is no mermaid named it here. What it shares in common with her other mermaid story is its reading level aimed for younger children.
The story follows 13 year-old Martha Glimmer. She is convinced this is the worst time of her life. Her mother has died and she has to put up with a woman who attempts to win over Martha's lonely father with food and opinions about how 13 year-old girls should behave. She longs to leave her home in hydrophobic Oak Grove and travel. Martha's best friend Trevor and his brother Eli also want to leave Oak Grove. Nicknamed Trout and Eel because of the thin webbing between their fingers and toes, they long to see the ocean. Together, Martha, Trout, and Eel eventually find the true meaning of home.
There was again some lack of detail in this story but even so that seems to add to its charm. The plot flows better in this story than Hoffman's other mermaid story within the confines of it's simplicity. There were parts that would sink anyone's heart as well as ones to make them smile.
